Shave of the Day 27-01-18

Brad Sears 2 band Polo

Wolfman 0.67 gap with Gillette Super Platinum

Stirling Blu aftershave

Ralph Lauren Polo Blue EDT

Nice blue themed shave today on what started out a nice looking day, which has turned rainy.

No issues loading up this soap with the Sears Polo brush and a quick face lather whipped up some lovely lather.

The Wolfman is a smooth and efficient shaver which doesn’t seem too fussy about what blade you throw in it. I seem to be taking blades to their limits of late and I reckon this was shave 5 or 6 on this blade and it was still going strong.

The Stirling splash finished things off nicely and is a good match to the soap, which in turn is a good match to the original Polo Blue EDT which I finished off with. I’ve got a solid 5-6 hours from the EDT which is enough for me on a Saturday afternoon.

I’ve become obsessed with fragrances again but have luckily found a few Facebook groups where I can get decants to try out some harder to find, less mainstream scents.

Christmas Shaves 2017

Boxing Day Shave

Yaqi Tuxedo

Wolfman with Gillette Wilkinson (1)

Maggard Razors Limes & Bergamot

Trumpers Lime Cologne

First try of the soap and brush which I got for Christmas. I’m a bit of a badger snob these days but actually enjoyed the Yaqi Tuxedo, which was quite a surprise. I tend to only really use my Stirling Kong brush these days if I’m in a bit of a hurry and don’t have time to soak a badger brush or I’m using a soap that might stain the tips.

The Yaqi seemed to have a bit more backbone than the Plisson type knots but without the horrible springiness of the STF type knots I’ve used in the past.

I’m impressed with the Maggard soap too which is made by the same artisan as Through the Fire Fine Crafts. I also got the Orange Menthol for Christmas which I’m still yet to use. They come in really nice tubs now like the new Barrister & Mann soaps. This soap had a nice strong lime scent throughout the shave.

The Wolfman as ever did a good job and I finished up with a splash of the Trumpers Lime cologne. I need another lime splash so I’ve got some Pinauld Lime Sec on the way.

Yaqi Tuxedo

Band of Brothers soap

Gillette Flair Tip Rocket with Gillette Wilkinson (2)

Fine Accoutrements Lavender Pour Homme

Another good shave with the Yaqi brush and another new soap. This soap was made as a limited edition soap for the British Based Shavers Facebook group. It has a nice lavender scent and is quite a soft soap.

The Rocket delivered a nice mild but efficient shave and the Lavender splash finished things off nicely.

New Forest 1901

Mickey Lee Soapworks Cape Verde

Gillette Tech on Mongoose handle with Gillette Wilkinson (3)

Mennen Skin Bracer

Back to a bit of badger to use another soap I got for Christmas, the Mickey Lee Soapworks Cape Verde. This is a really nice fougere type scent with a bright orange note, which makes for a nice twist on the usual fougere scent. Excellent performance from this soap.

I fancied trying out one of my old Tech razors so gave that a try and was surprised by the result with the heavier Mongoose handle. Pretty close after three passes.

I finished up with a splash of Skin Bracer, which I don’t think I’ve used in some time.

All in all three good shaves over the Christmas period with some newly acquired items. It’s nice being off work as I’ve actually had chance to write a blog post. I mainly stick to posting on the Shaving with Style Facebook group these days. If you frequent the Facebook groups join up.

Shaver Heaven week

Mennen Skin Bracer

I had a delivery of Shaver Heaven soaps arrive today to add to the few I already have. I went with the Gone Grapefruit which has a similar scent to TOBS grapefruit, nice and fresh and ideal for the warm summer weather we have been having.

It whipped up really nice and thick with plenty of slickness. I had about 36 hours growth to get rid of so the Futur was the obvious choice, on setting 4 WTG I was looking like I was cleanly shaven after the first pass. I turned the settings down one number per pass and after 3 passes finishing on setting 2 I was pretty much BBS all over.

A quick cooling splash of Skin Bracer and I was done and spent the rest of the night feeling my face in awe of the smoothness.

Floid Vigoroso aftershave

First try of the tallow Shaver Heaven soap and the ikon slant. I think I need to dial this soap in a bit more. It has a nice scent which smells like the little bubble gum balls you get.

The ikon did a good job but didn’t quite feel as smooth as the 102 slant. It seemed to have a different angle as well. Again more use needed to get the best from it I think.

The Floid was nice and cooling on this hot night and I’m left with the nice powdery amber scent.

Gillette Super Stainless (2)
PAA Al Fin

Another Shaver Heaven shave with the neroli and vetiver soap which I believe is an older formulation to those used previously. I whipped up a lovely thick slick lather with the Stirling Kong brush. The scent on this is nice and when I first got it the vetiver was the dominant note, now with a few uses the neroli seems to have become the dominant note. Just goes to show that scents can change as you get through a soap.

I’m still not a fan of the X3, it’s just not as smooth feeling in use as the 102. It could be the blade I guess so I’m going to switch it out the the B1 slant and try something else in the X3 before making a decision.

EDIT: since trying a new blade it was much smoother.

Overall a good shave was had which was rounded off by a good splash of Al Fin which was very cooling and smelt great.

Brut Sports Style aftershave

I used the oldest formula Shaver Heaven soap I have to round off this week of Shaver Heaven shaves. All of the soaps have performed great but I do find the newer formulas an improvement on what was always a good vegetable based soap.

The scent on this one is great for summer, it’s like a fruit salad type of scent, much more than just lemon, there’s some melon and mandarin in there too.

The BSSW manchurian whipped up plenty of thick slick lather. I felt a little dryer post shave than the newer formula soaps but that is all. The actual shave performance seems similar throughout the range.

The B1 slant with the same blade felt much smoother in use than the X3 and its a lot more audible in use. It’s got to be one of the noisiest razors I have. 3 passes left me nice and smooth and a splash of the Brut sports style finished the job nicely and was a good compliment to the shave soap scent.

This week I’ll be mostly…

Using Speick!

Speick aftershave

I love the scent of Speick and it’s been too long since I last used it. This should be a good week. A few of us on the shaving room forum will be using a single soap for a whole week and this week is Speick week.

Great thick shiny lather from rubbing the stick on my face then lathering up with the Honey Farm badger brush my wife bought me for Christmas. I really like this brush and it’s performed perfectly from the first use.

I’ve also got my Speick cream out for later in the week and although this blade seemed fine I’ll likely swap it and use a different razor for my next shave.

The Speick aftershave had great skin friendly ingredients and is one I’ll usually reach for if I’ve had a rough shave. I’m really liking the scent, I’ll have to see if I can get the EDT in the future.

Finally getting the house straight and not so many boxes everywhere which is nice. It’s been a busy but nice Christmas break and it’s gone quickly. Back to work tomorrow. I hope you’ve all enjoyed the festivities and Happy New Year to you all.

Proraso Aftershave Splash

Better shave on the second outing for the 1912. Not sure if it was getting the knack back or the blade smoothing out.

Went back to the sample of the Knockout Shave Black soap I was given recently. I like the thick lather this produced which is very protective, certainly made the 1912 much easier to shave with and I think the tallow gives good glide also.

Finished off with a good splash of the Proraso aftershave which has to be one of my favourites and one of the few I am tempted to get a big 400ml bottle of. Leaves the skin feeling very good and I love the cooling menthol kick.

Goodbye J Peterman

Today was my second and final shave with the J Peterman 1903 cream before returning it with some goodies for my friend to try. I’ve also fell off the not buying shaving stuff wagon as I ordered a tub of the Proraso Red pre shave cream yesterday from shavelounge. I also bought a bottle of British Sterling aftershave off eBay as I heard it’s goes well with Caties Bubbles LPV. Apart from an Omega S brush in the near future I’m hoping to get back on the wagon, for a couple of months at least.

Anyway on to today’s shave…
