Proraso Aftershave Splash

Really nice shave today, one of those moments where everything comes together. I’m in a good mood as I had some good news today but this shave just made a things that little bit better.

I shook out the excess water from the brush which left it quite damp and loaded up the Fresco soap for about 30 seconds. Face lathering the soap it was almost instantly where I wanted it, a few drops of water worked in and I had a nice slick thick lather. This is one of those soaps I always enjoy using, I a little over halfway through this tub and can just about see a hint of the bottom of the tub through the soap. Quite a few shaves left but I’m looking forward to finish in a soap as it’s been a while.

I found today that this brush works well building a lather with paintbrush strokes, you can go in a circular motion but it just seemed to work really well using the paint strokes. Pure luxury softness from this brush, no scritch at all, it really is cloud soft but with just the right amount of backbone.

These Schick twin blades are nice and on setting 7 in the adjustable turned out a great result and a really close shave. Minor bit of damage with I caught a tiny spot I hadn’t noticed so there was blood but nothing major. I like the fact I can use a tiny bit of pressure with the Schick to get close in some areas.

All rounded off with a generous splash of the Proraso aftershave. Still my favourite splash, leaves my skin feeling good, moisturised and it has a great scent that I keep getting whiffs of.

All in all a good day topped off with a great shave.

Another busy bank holiday weekend meant I didn’t get chance to blog Saturday’s shave. Let’s talk about today’s shave while its fresh in my head.

I bought a sample of the Catie’s Bubbles Purple Grapefruit in a recent order to see if the scent was for me. Not good news for the bank account because I like it and will pick up a tub in the future.

The usual CB soap performance, it might have just been how I lathered up today but it felt slicker than some of the others I have tried.

A nice scent which starts off mainly with the lavender, but a nice lavender that isn’t over powering with a little sweetness from the grapefruit. Throughout the shave I kept getting little bursts of the sweet grapefruit scent and then relathering for each pass got a boost of the relaxing lavender scent.

The Schick performed well and left me pretty much BBS after 3 passes. I do like the Schick as you can bear down a bit on the most persistent areas of stubble with no fear of nicks or irritation.

A quick splash of the Alpa Fougere cologne and I was done. It has a nice fougere scent which went well with the lavender and drys down to a clean powdery scent.

Following on with the lavender theme Saturday’s shave was

La Toja Aftershave

First try of the Nannys Silly Soap Olive Oil French Lavender soap which a friend gave me with about one shave left in the tin. Unlike most soaps with olive oil this actually lathers and doesn’t break down, I think the olive oil gives this a bit more slickness as well. Good clean lavender scent with this one too and I had a good shave with the Ikon slant.

I finished off with a splash of the La Toja aftershave which is very nice and smells to me a bit like Drakkar Noir. I recently got an Al Rehab perfume oil called Dakar which is a clone of Drakkar Noir and a few days left me smelling good all afternoon.

So good perhaps it lead to a few purchases later on in the day, well I’m blaming smelling good anyway lol.

I now have about 9 soaps on their way to me along with 2 bottles of Fine aftershave courtesy of the shaving station. They are really nice people to deal with and if you spend over £20 you got a free Haslinger soap so that’s one of the 9 soaps winging their way to me through the post.

Luckily I never bought into the whole DE shaving to save money, just a better smoother shave with no irritation and ingrown hairs. I always had a thing for scents and smelling good since my late teens, and always want to try the latest things from the newest chocolate bar to the latest multi blade cartridge. I’m sure some of you have great will power and can stick to the most minimal of setup, and I’m very jealous of you.

Fine Accoutrements Clean Vetiver aftershave

Everyone seems to be getting in on menthol May so I thought I’d join in today.

This soap is very cooling with a strong Vetiver scent, it reminds me of Guerlain Vetiver. It has the usual great Catie’s Bubbles performance which is plenty slick with a nice post shave feel.

The Personna injector blade is still going strong 5 shaves in on this blade. I do find my shaves are a bit quicker with the Schick Injector, not sure why but they just are. For ease of use they are very similar to a cartridge razor.

Today’s shave was finished off with a splash of Fine Accoutrements Clean Vetiver aftershave which matched the soap well and continued the icy menthol effect on my face.

I should be able to squeeze one more shave out of this sample before moving on to some other samples I have lying around. I’m hoping to use a few up by concentrating on using samples for the rest of the month.

First try of the Italian formula Barnegat Bay shaving soap from Catie’s Bubbles. First impression is I like this a lot and I’m surprised that you don’t hear as much about the Italian formula soap compared to the French formula.

It’s a strong classic bay rum scent, which lasts throughout the shave with no hint of irritation. I was using the Plisson synthetic fibre brush today which lathers everything with ease and this soap was no exception. It’s been a while since I used this brush and its reminded me just what a great brush it is and I should really get myself a spare direct from Plisson. I think one of the acetate handles would be very nice.

Back to the soap, I found this to be a nice thick lather that was very slick and had great post shave skincare. I’m almost thinking it’s better than the French formula for me.

I had 3 days growth to remove today so I set the Schick on the highest setting of 8 for the first two passes then down to 5 for the final against the grain pass. The results were very smooth, one of my best shaves in a while I think.

Finished off with a splash of Proraso green aftershave splash, it’s my favourite aftershave and I really like the cooling menthol chill. When the two bottles I have are gone I’m going to buy the 400ml bottle.

Quick spray of YSL La Nuit De L’Homme EDT and I was all set for the day. I’ve decided I’m going to try to use the many little soap samples I have accumulated over the next month to clear a bit of space in the den.

Nice shave today with the LTV that arrived in the mail today. Elcubbo sent me a sample a while back and I loved the scent so it had to be the next Catie’s Bubbles soap I bought.

The usual great lather with a really nice scent of oakmoss, sandalwood and patchouli.

3 easy passes with the Schick on setting 7 and I’m left nice and smooth.

I finished off with a splash of witch hazel and a good dose of the Alpa Fougere Cologne which matches the soap quite well.

Oh yes here’s a picture of the mailcall from today

The LTV a tub of Barnegat Bay italian formula soap and a sample pot of Purple Grapefruit which smells very nice. I also have a few samples of some other scents a friend sent me as well. Also I had a separate parcel arrive with a bottle of Art of Shaving Lemon EDT which will be nice in the warmer weather.

Homemade Bay Rum
Ricardo L’homme Sport aftershave

A very nice shave today. First use of the Mickey Lee Hallowed Harvest soap after buying this a few weeks back. It has a similar smell to the Drunken Goat soap but with spices, I guess that’s down to it having ale in the soap formula.

The Semogue 2 band badger brush has plenty of backbone so loading up the soap is easy, it also has really soft tips which feels good on the face. For the money this is a really nice brush that I’d recommend.

I face lathered starting with swirling the brush around to work the lather into my skin and lifting the stubble then began painting the lather on with brush strokes and soon had a nice thick lather ready to shave with. As with other MLSW soaps the lather is nice and thick and slick with good protective qualities.

I upped the Schick adjustable to 7 today for all 3 passes and got a nice smooth close shave with no irritation.

I finished off my shave with a splash of my homemade bay rum which I’d added a bit more scent to but it could still do with a bit more. I’m going to separate some out and add some menthol crystals to see how that goes. As I was lacking in scent I tried a splash of Ricardo L’homme sport a friend gave me. It’s also a little light in scent but has a minty bay rum scent that’s pleasant if a bit fleeting.

My own Bay Rum Aftershave

I had a bit of a revelation today. I was reading up on Caties Bubbles and saw someone mention using the Marco method of lathering, I think it may have even been Marco over at Badger and Blade. I’ve not had any issue lathering LPV previously but thought I’d give it a go today.

For those that haven’t heard of this you take a very wet brush and let the water drip out until it isn’t dripping any more but is still holding a lot of water. I gave the brush two very light downward drops to get a little more water out as I was face lathering and didn’t want to get too messy. I then very lightly swirled on the soap for 60 seconds and began face lathering, pretty much straight away the lather began to build on my face and after about a minute of working the lather into my stubble I had a huge amount of lather at the perfect consistency for shaving. I painted on the lather to level it out and began my shave.

The Schick gives a nice shave and today I had it opened up to setting 6 which cut through my stubble with ease. After 3 passes I was 90% BBS, which was good enough for me.

I finished off today’s shave with a splash of some bay rum I made a while back. It leaves the skin feeling good but the scent only lasts a few minutes. I’m going to try adding a bit more of another bay rum I have to up the scent and maybe even a little menthol just to spice things up a little.
