SOTD 30.06.18

Well it’s been a while since I last posted. I’ve been really busy and also lost a little bit of interest in chasing the latest, must have shaving stuff. I’ve definitely got a lot more cynical of the latest, greatest soap, which gets hyped by the same old people and then suddenly you never see them mentioned anymore.

I’ve been spending my time using up the stuff I have and quite a few samples I have accumulated along the way. I’ve come to realise that the new hyped soaps really don’t offer much over the old staples like Proraso and TOBS, other than a bigger variety of scents. Still it can be pretty fun along the way trying stuff, but you tend to hit a point where you have too much stuff and a pile of soaps you haven’t even tried yet.

Anyway, enough moaning, on to today’s shave.

3P preshave

SV Silvertip

Arianna & Evans Monte Carlo

Colonial Brass General with Feather Pro

Myrsol Plastic Shave

Dior Sauvage

It’s been a while since I used a preshave but I used 3P today as I didn’t have much time for a good prep and it was so warm I wanted some menthol to cool me down. I left it on for a while and did some other things, letting my brush soak at the same time.

When I started to wet my face and lather up I decided it was so warm that I’d use some cooler than usual water for today’s shave.

The soap loaded up fairly easily into the brush and seemed to be forming a good lather whilst it was loading. The scent is quite similar to Sauvage but the scent strength isn’t all that strong. About a 4 or 5 to my nose, a little disappointing. It’s a vegan soap and the first pass wasn’t all that impressive, I thought, oh no, another over hyped soap.

The next two passes seemed much better with nice slickness and glide and good protection. The brass General is a really great razor and I’m glad I managed to pick one up a while ago after trying out a friends.

I washed off the soap and noticed that I seemed to have got a really close shave. I used the Myrsol because I don’t really have an aftershave that smells much like Sauvage and I know the Myrsol scent doesn’t last all that long. Great face feel and menthol cooling from their splashes though. Choose your favourite scent and get one if you’ve never tried one, you won’t be disappointed.

Finished off with a few sprays and Dior Sauvage and set about a busy day in the garden. I was already a fragrance addict when I started the blog but it seems to have got worse recently.

Hopefully I’ll blog more often if life doesn’t get in the way. Most days I get my evening shave done and go to bed.

Razorock Black Mamba

Tuesday 10.05.16
Vitos preshave (not much left!)
Shavemac zebra beehive
Reef Point – Peerless
Razorock Black Mamba
Gillette Super Platinum (1)
Pinaud Clubman Vanilla aftershave

First shave with the mamba on loan from a friend in the UK. In use it felt like the greatest razor ever filling all the hype but the end result wasn’t quite as close as I wanted. I’ll have to try some other blade combos. Maybe a feather!

The scent on this soap is very nice like a sweet tobacco scent which pairs well with the vanilla Clubman aftershave.

Thursday 12.05.16
Vitos Preshave
Brad Sears Shaveworks S8 Manchurian
Saponificio Varesino 70th Anniversary soap
Razorock Black Mamba
Gillette Super Platinum (2)
SV 70th Anniversary Aftershave

I’ve missed using the great SV soaps. Really nice fresh scent on this one and plenty of thick slick lather. I really like the slick residual layer this soap leaves behind for little touch ups and protects the skin well. The matching balm just finishes things off nicely.

Still impressed by the feel of this razor but feel it might provide a closer shave with a sharper blade.

Saturday 14.05.16
Vitos Preshave
Shavemac Barber 26mm 2 band
Irisch Moos shaving stick
Razorock Black Mamba
Feather (1)
Irisch Moos aftershave

A much closer shave today with the feather. The mamba tames a feather well. I was going to use Tabac today but remembered that I keep meaning to use my Irisch Moos stick. Brilliant lather with a fresh green scent. The splash has quite a strong scent which hangs around for a while too.

Sunday 15.05.16
Vitos Preshave
Tipsoft Blonde Badger
Barrister & Mann Roam
Razorock Black Mamba
Feather (2)
Myrsol Antesol

Another nice black mamba shave. The Barrister and Mann Roam soap is a very unique scent, very complex and dark. I got a scent like an old well worn leather jacket, something like engine oil and a smokey earthy scent. I was lucky enough to borrow this with the mamba and although it’s a scent that splits opinion, I didn’t find it off putting in any way.

All in all a good shave with the above.

Tuesday 17.05.16
Vitos Preshave
The Big Shave Super Silvertip
Petal Pushers Fancies – Amber
Razorock Black Mamba
Feather (3)
Floid Vigoroso aftershave

I really like this plush brush and it whipped up a really nice lather today. A third shave was too much for the feather blade so I changed to a Polsilver after the first pass.

With a weeks worth of shaves with the mamba my thoughts are its a very nice razor with good looks and the coating does seem to make it glide very well over the skin. It feels really smooth in use but it’s probably just a bit too mild for my liking. I’m very privileged to have had the chance to try it though.

Review: Saponificio Varesino Tundra Artica

Saponificio Varesino are Italian soap makers and have been making soaps since 1945.

They started making shaving soaps and have developed the formula over time and are currently making soaps to a formula named beta 4.1. The range has various skin friendly ingredients which vary with each flavour of soap in the range.

This review is for the latest soap I have from them, the Tundra Artica with extracts of:

Icelandic lichen(soothing, purifying, antibacterial, calming)
cranberry (suitable for sensitive skin, soothing and toning, gives freshness and vitality).

This is a 150g triple milled hard soap which comes presented in a quality cardboard box with a wax tissue surrounding it. The actual soap comes in a plastic PET container whih allows you to switch soaps in their wooden bowl as and when you feel like a change of scent.
I have a few different SV soaps and they all perform as well as any other top tier shaving soap. I find that although they are a vegetable soap base they perform as well as any tallow soaps I’ve tried, which is quite a feat as I’ve always found veggie soaps to be lacking that dense creamy lather you get from a tallow soap.

It’s quite very nice scent which is like a quality cologne scent based on Agar Wood (Oud) and is a very masculine scent. One I imagine a very refined gentleman would wear. This isn’t your typical mainstream high street scent. Saponificio Varesino provide scent pyramids with their soaps which I have included below:
The scent strength is good and lasts for the whole shave. I also have the aftershave balm which allows you to carry the scent on after the shave. I have seen some people mention that they have found the scents to be on the lighter side so I assume there might be some variation in the different batches but all 4 scents I have are of a medium to strong scent.

The lather builds easily with this soap. I find leaving a very small amount of about a teaspoon on the puck while I am showering softens it to allow for an easy loading of the brush, it loads extremely easily for a triple milled soap. I’ve used a variety of brushes with no issue at all. I’ve found it best to start out with a damp brush and add drops to the lather as you go. I’ve found this soap to be extremely slick with good protection and excellent post shave feel with no dry feeling.

Post Shave
As mentioned above the post shave feel of these soaps are very good. I often find a veggie soap can be quite drying on my skin but Saponificio Varesino obviously have great experience in the making of soap and balancing out the ingredients for a great post shave feel. There aftershaves are like a cross between a splash and a balm so are perfect for me as I find balms a little too heavy with my oily skin.

Sodium Cocoate, Potassium Stearate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Rapeseedate Sodium, Sodium Sunflower Seedate, Aqua / Water / Eau, Iceland Moss Extract, Fraxinus Ornus (Manna Ash) Sap Extract, Parfum / Fragrance, Vaccinium myrtillus Fruit Extract, Sucrose Cocoate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, Xanthan Gum, Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Sodium Chloride, Tocopheryl Acetate, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Citric Acid, Citronellol

Overall a great soap and one I can definitely recommend, this stuff is a definite top tier product and easily matches up to my favourite tallow soaps. It is extremely slick and protective as well as easy to lather. Buy some, you won’t be disappointed.

There are many different vendors stocking the SV range of soaps. The best information on the range can be found via their website here. I found the best deal when I picked my puck up was the shave lounge with free delivery. I believe samples can also be bought from shavedash if you are looking to try out the different scents before buying a full puck.

Quite a tuggy blade this Mem blade.

Vitos Preshave
Whipped Dog 24mm High Mountain
Saponificio Varesino Felce Aromatica
7 o’clock Long Comb on ikon SE
Vintage English Wilkinson Sword (1)
Aqua Velva Ice Sport aftershave

Another great shave after changing blades. I really do like these Saponificio Varesino soaps. They perform just like a good tallow soap. Can’t wait to get the 70th Anniversary soap and aftershave next week for my birthday.

Vitos Preshave
Omega Mighty Midget
Stirling Soap Co Mogadishu Hope
Long Comb 7 o’clock on ikon SE
English Wilkinson Sword (2)
Floid Vigoroso aftershave
Pal Zileri Colonia Purissima EDT

I tried out this soap piffed to me by a friend of mine. Very impressive and a complex scent which I like. Great Stirling Soap Co performance whipped up with ease with the tiny Omega brush. The brush is still breaking in but gets the job done well.

Vitos preshave
Razorock Chubby Silvertip
CRSW Sandalwood
7 o’clock long comb
English Wilkinson Sword (3)
Versace Dreamer aftershave
Truefitt & Hill No 10 balm

Great shave from the above setup. This brush is so soft and luxurious feeling on the face. It really does give more expensive brushes a run for their money. This is probably about the third time I’ve used this soap but it is good stuff. I could barely feel the blade on my face and the glide was really good. A little drying after use but nothing the splash and balm didn’t sort out.

SOTD 11.01.16 – 16.01.16

Here are this weeks shaves.
3P preshave
Epsilon 2 Band
Saponificio Varesino Tundra Artica shaving soap
Ikon 102
Gillette Sharp Edge (4)
Saponificio Varesino Tundra Artica aftershave

A very nice soap from Saponificio Varesino, I seem to be accumulating a few of these soaps now. The Tundra Artica is the third soap now and I have the 70th anniversary soap and balm lined up for my birthday next month. Truly great soaps and I’m a fan of the balm type aftershave which is rare for me as I prefer a splash. In fact this is the second use of this soap in three days so it must be good.

3P preshave
Silvertip Badger Brush
Soapy Bathman Orang-ouli
Ikon 102 with SE handle
Astra Superior Stainless (1)

Stirling Kong Synthetic
Stirling Ozark Mountain soap
Ikon 102 with SE handle
Astra Superior Stainless (2)
Fine Accoutrements L’Orange Noir
Dr Harris Windsor EDT

It’s been too long since I used a Stirling soap. My skin feels great and soft to the touch which is just what is needed now the weather has turned Baltic.

I thought I’d change how I was blogging as I don’t have as much time these days so have been adding photos throughout the week and putting it all together for a weekend post.
