The Big Shave Silvertip LE

Soapy Science Hanalei

Blackland Sabre

Gem Blade

Myrsol Plastic Shave

I got some of the Soapy Science soaps as part of the ATG shaving forum group buy last week. I tried the Citrus Lolly one last week which smelt really nice, but this Hanalei one is even better.

I put a little water on top of the soap and went to the next room while my brush soaked and I could smell the scent from the next room! It’s a really nice floral scent which is inspired by Hanalei Bay.

The soaps were part of a young girls school project and as her dad is a keen wet shavers they decided to make a shaving soap for the science project.

The soap is quite hard compared to most artisan soaps so you need to make sure you load up well compared to softer soaps.

You’re rewarded with a really nice slick protective lather and good post shave feel.

The Blackland Sabre is a fairly new addition and I’ve enjoyed the shaves I’ve had with it so far. I’m still working on the angle a bit compared to older Gem razors. It’s a really smooth shave and you can barely feel the blade.

Myrsol was the closest match I had to the soap and the menthol was just nice on a hot day.

I didn’t get time to write this up yesterday but it’s given me a chance to post today’s arrival in the post. Some shaving soaps from South Africa from River Valley Trading. I’m looking forward to trying these out.

Well it’s been a while since I last posted. I’ve been really busy and also lost a little bit of interest in chasing the latest, must have shaving stuff. I’ve definitely got a lot more cynical of the latest, greatest soap, which gets hyped by the same old people and then suddenly you never see them mentioned anymore.

I’ve been spending my time using up the stuff I have and quite a few samples I have accumulated along the way. I’ve come to realise that the new hyped soaps really don’t offer much over the old staples like Proraso and TOBS, other than a bigger variety of scents. Still it can be pretty fun along the way trying stuff, but you tend to hit a point where you have too much stuff and a pile of soaps you haven’t even tried yet.

Anyway, enough moaning, on to today’s shave.

Colonial Brass General with Feather Pro

Myrsol Plastic Shave

Dior Sauvage

It’s been a while since I used a preshave but I used 3P today as I didn’t have much time for a good prep and it was so warm I wanted some menthol to cool me down. I left it on for a while and did some other things, letting my brush soak at the same time.

When I started to wet my face and lather up I decided it was so warm that I’d use some cooler than usual water for today’s shave.

The soap loaded up fairly easily into the brush and seemed to be forming a good lather whilst it was loading. The scent is quite similar to Sauvage but the scent strength isn’t all that strong. About a 4 or 5 to my nose, a little disappointing. It’s a vegan soap and the first pass wasn’t all that impressive, I thought, oh no, another over hyped soap.

The next two passes seemed much better with nice slickness and glide and good protection. The brass General is a really great razor and I’m glad I managed to pick one up a while ago after trying out a friends.

I washed off the soap and noticed that I seemed to have got a really close shave. I used the Myrsol because I don’t really have an aftershave that smells much like Sauvage and I know the Myrsol scent doesn’t last all that long. Great face feel and menthol cooling from their splashes though. Choose your favourite scent and get one if you’ve never tried one, you won’t be disappointed.

Finished off with a few sprays and Dior Sauvage and set about a busy day in the garden. I was already a fragrance addict when I started the blog but it seems to have got worse recently.

Hopefully I’ll blog more often if life doesn’t get in the way. Most days I get my evening shave done and go to bed.

Trumpers Eucris Shave

Really nice relaxing shave today after a long soak in the bath.

I’ve not used the suribachi bowl, or any bowl for that matter in ages. I even found that the bowl fits a jug in the bathroom perfectly so I had a makeshift scuttle to keep the lather warm.

With a little squeeze of cream in the bowl I started to lather up but forgot to give the brush a good squeeze to get most of the water out. I thought that was the cream wasted but after working it in the bowl I ended up with a good lather. I usually face lather so worked the lather into my face well for a minute or two to get the full beard softening effect and prep my skin for my shave.

The borrowed ikon slant did a great job of mowing down 2.5 days stubble with the old made in England Wilkinson blade. Pretty close shave after three passes.

I finished off with a cold water rinse and a splash of Myrsol Plastic Shave. I chose the Myrsol as the scent isn’t strong and fades quickly so I could finish off with a splash of the matching Eucris EDT.

If you’re reading Trumpers you really need to make a matching aftershave or skinfood in the Eucris scent. It’s got to be one of my top scents, so dark and manly.

AdP Oud

I forgot till I was mid shave that I had a sample of the AdP Oud, hence the change to an aftershave that wouldn’t hang around and clash.

First try of this soap and I love the scent. A really nice oud scent which is a dead ringer for the AdP Oud scent. The usual great razorock performance from this soap which looking at the label is the tallow version. Good post shave feel and not drying for me.

I picked up an ikon SE handle so paired that with the 102 slant for a nice easy shave with the new Sputnik blade. The handle gives some nice weight to the shave and a good length.

Finished with the Myrsol Plastic Shave for its fleeting scent so I could have a few squirts of the AdP Oud to continue the great oud scent of the soap.

All in all a very nice shave. Here’s the combined mailcall of this morning.

Myrsol Plastic Shave Aftershave

A very tiring day today. Up early and round the boot sale where I found this rack and then back home to sort the garden out while it was still sunny.

I’ve had the Beaudelaire out for a while to use again and today was the day. A nice dark scent which I guess isn’t for everyone but I quite like it and it’s different to everything else I have. No problems loading up the duke and working up a nice slick lather on my face.

I wanted the speed and ease of the mongoose and got out another one of the Captain Sharp Blades to try. The last one I used I didn’t think too much of and binned it after four shaves. I’ll see how this one goes. Did the job ok tonight though.

I rounded off the shave with a splash of the Myrsol Plastic Shave which has a fleeting scent but a nice menthol kick and really leaves the skin feeling soft. Part of the reason for using the Myrsol was to let me try out the Jean Paul Gaultier Fleur de Male EDT I picked up today. It’s a really nice floral scent. One I’ll enjoy wearing.

Grandstaff Holy Smokes and trying a Straight Razor

Myrsol Plastic Shave Aftershave

First attempt with the straight razor I won in a competition held by shavemaven.com. I’ve only used the feather artist club prior to this and didn’t really get on well with that. Maybe I was jumping in too fast previously so today I just started by doing my cheeks and switching to the mongoose for the rest of my shave. That seemed to work better for me and I escaped without any injuries!

Another use of the synthetic brush I’m testing and it delivered again today with the great grandstaff soap. The scent is a really nice floral tobacco type scent which is really strong, one of the strongest scented soaps I’ve ever used.

Really great performance from this soap that is hard to come by these days. The lather seems perfect in every way and it felt like there wasn’t even a blade in the mongoose.

The result today was a very nice close shave with no drama at all and I really enjoyed the grandstaff soap.

The scent of the soap was still hanging around after the shave so I followed up with a good splash of the Myrsol Plastic Shave which is one of my favourites and leaves your face nice and soft with a refreshing hint of menthol.
