Christmas Shaves 2017

Boxing Day Shave

Yaqi Tuxedo

Wolfman with Gillette Wilkinson (1)

Maggard Razors Limes & Bergamot

Trumpers Lime Cologne

First try of the soap and brush which I got for Christmas. I’m a bit of a badger snob these days but actually enjoyed the Yaqi Tuxedo, which was quite a surprise. I tend to only really use my Stirling Kong brush these days if I’m in a bit of a hurry and don’t have time to soak a badger brush or I’m using a soap that might stain the tips.

The Yaqi seemed to have a bit more backbone than the Plisson type knots but without the horrible springiness of the STF type knots I’ve used in the past.

I’m impressed with the Maggard soap too which is made by the same artisan as Through the Fire Fine Crafts. I also got the Orange Menthol for Christmas which I’m still yet to use. They come in really nice tubs now like the new Barrister & Mann soaps. This soap had a nice strong lime scent throughout the shave.

The Wolfman as ever did a good job and I finished up with a splash of the Trumpers Lime cologne. I need another lime splash so I’ve got some Pinauld Lime Sec on the way.

Yaqi Tuxedo

Band of Brothers soap

Gillette Flair Tip Rocket with Gillette Wilkinson (2)

Fine Accoutrements Lavender Pour Homme

Another good shave with the Yaqi brush and another new soap. This soap was made as a limited edition soap for the British Based Shavers Facebook group. It has a nice lavender scent and is quite a soft soap.

The Rocket delivered a nice mild but efficient shave and the Lavender splash finished things off nicely.

New Forest 1901

Mickey Lee Soapworks Cape Verde

Gillette Tech on Mongoose handle with Gillette Wilkinson (3)

Mennen Skin Bracer

Back to a bit of badger to use another soap I got for Christmas, the Mickey Lee Soapworks Cape Verde. This is a really nice fougere type scent with a bright orange note, which makes for a nice twist on the usual fougere scent. Excellent performance from this soap.

I fancied trying out one of my old Tech razors so gave that a try and was surprised by the result with the heavier Mongoose handle. Pretty close after three passes.

I finished up with a splash of Skin Bracer, which I don’t think I’ve used in some time.

All in all three good shaves over the Christmas period with some newly acquired items. It’s nice being off work as I’ve actually had chance to write a blog post. I mainly stick to posting on the Shaving with Style Facebook group these days. If you frequent the Facebook groups join up.

Nice quick 2 pass shave just to tidy up a bit. My shave on Sunday was quite early in the day so I was looking scruffy. First use of the new B&M soap and it’s a nice refreshing lavender scent with some black tea in there too. I don’t own many lavender scented soaps so it makes a nice change. Good thick lather too.

Proraso aftershave

This wasn’t a great shave and I’m not entirely sure why. I think the blade failed me early on which is unusual for these blades. I can always get a minimum of 3 shaves from one but this one went south fast. I’m not sure I dialled in this soap either, the lather seemed fairly flat. Nothing like the thick B&M lather from the night before. I’ll go back to this soon and give it another go but it wasn’t all that impressive to me on the first use.

Myrsol Antesol

Most of this shave was items loaned to me by a friend, some nice stuff here. I wanted to see how the finest badger hair compared to the manchurian hair. It’s still very nice but I’ll need a few shaves to see how it compares.

The Barrister & Mann Diamond soap is an interesting scent, first smell reminded me of cutting the grass in the garden. In use it develops into an interesting scent which is supposed to be like being at a baseball game. Leather, caramel popcorn and even beer are mixed in with the freshly cut grass scent. The performance was very nice too, slick this tallowy goodness.

First try of the slant as well, it’s quite light feeling and I felt it was a little difficult to find the right angle at first. I’m still not sure I’ve got it right. The head is quite a bulky thing but I managed to get everywhere with it ok.

I finished off with a splash of Antesol, a nice splash from Myrsol, probably my favourite of the ones I have used.

First try of the CRSW Puro Fresco and the lather was really good. I think I’ll like this soap a lot. Still struggled with the slant so I’ll try another blade next time around as it didn’t seem sharp enough so a bit tuggy.

The Dandy Gent Classic 47 splash

Final shave with the chief before I send it back to my friend. I really did enjoy using this brush and the face feel was nice and soft and luxurious.

I was sent a few samples by The Dandy Gent who are based in the UK and have a range of shaving products that can be used from start to finish in a shave. I’ve had a few tries of the facial scrub which has a nice apricot scent and uses crushed walnut shells to exfoliate the skin rather than those controversial plastic balls. So far it seems very nice stuff and I’ll do a further report once it’s been used a bit more. The Classic 47 splash has a great scent and face feel too. I’m not 100% sure what the notes are in this scent but it’s very nice and I think it would appeal to all ages. The dry down reminded me of Spice Bomb in a way. A masculine yet fresh and modern scent which went down well with my wife which is always good.

Brut aftershave

Quick 2 pass shave with the mongoose, no time for a photo today. I wanted to try the Van Yulay soap again before returning it to my friend. The post shave feel of this soap is great but I just didn’t enjoy the lather it generates and I found I needed to load a lot of soap to get a decent lather. It’s a very dense creamy lather but I just found it too flat for my liking, it reminded me of a brushless shaving cream and lacked the fun of whipping up a good lather as it seemed to form quickly and easily. Overall just not one I’d rush out and buy.

Mikes Natural Soap – Barbershop
Feather Pro (7)
Floid Blue aftershave

What can I say, Mikes is a great soap, truly top tier artisan soap with lots of slickness. It’s one of my top soaps and probably only second to Stirling for slickness. The barbershop scent is also very nice.

A great close shave from the mongoose finished off with a cooling splash of Floid. What better way to unwind after a hectic and draining day at work.

Monogamy or monotony?

Barrister & Mann Barristers Reserve aftershave

Back to the monogamous shaves with Caties Bubbles La Terre Verte, had a really nice lather from this brush. The loft is quite high so it feels a lot more luxurious than my other shavemac brush. Different handle for the goose today, quite a nice one actually for the price. I’m thinking I need to try the feather super blades to see if they can get a slightly closer shave for me than the professional blades.

I tried out the sample of the new barrister and mann aftershave and it’s quite nice. Like an old school scent similar to original Floid to me.

Really good results with the above today. I used some of the vitos after washing my face with some soap in the bath and left that on till I got out and put the oil on. I’m not sure if it was a freak coincidence or just the extra prep? I’ll try this again soon and see how it goes.

I was still thinking I need to try the feather super blade and even thought this blade was a little tuggy feeling which is a bit early for one of these blades to go blunt. I hear about people getting 20+ shaves from a blade but 10 is pushing it for me. It seemed after the first pass the blades glided a lot better so maybe it was an initial lather issue.

New brush today as I’ve always wanted one of the rubberset 400 brushes but wasn’t willing to pay the high prices these fetch these days. The crown king version seemed great to me with the plisson style knot. Great lather whipped up in no time.

I can finally see the end of monogamous March and it will be great to try out some of the new soaps I’ve acquired recently. I’ve been trying to use a different brush for each shave and I’ve done that so far and could probably make it to the end without doubling up but as I’m going away over Easter I’ll just take one with me to save packing space!

Luckily I’ve just got a new brush from Brad Sears that looks great so deciding what to pack should be easy enough. Speaking of which here is the new brush in all its glory.
I can highly recommend Brad to anyone that is looking for a good quality brush. It was a joy working with him on this new custom brush and his customer service and commitment to detail are unrivalled to me.

I know I’m going to like this brush a lot!

Only a week left of monogamous March and I’ve quite enjoyed sticking to the one soap. I’m probably going to have a big blow out and use all the new soaps I’ve gotten since the beginning of the month but I’m quite keen to use my soaps on a longer basis to see how they perform in depth.

First use of this brush today and I like it a lot. Really soft on the face and it just feels like pure luxury to me. It’s bloomed well as you will see from the photo and is a nice big knot on the face which holds plenty of lather. It’s no lather hog either and has good flow through. For me it’s pretty much perfect. That rounds off a pretty good week for me.

Enjoy the Easter weekend and eat plenty of chocolate eggs!

Razorocktober continues

Continuing the Razorocktober theme with at least one product per shave. I’ve decided to blog more shaves per post on the blog.

Thursday 8th October
Whipped Dog High Mountain 24mm
Razorock San Valentino
Schick Adjustable @ 7
Schick Twin blade (1)
Arko Gold Power aftershave

First try of these twin blades, very nice blades indeed. I’m really liking the whipped dog brush. It worked up a really nice creamy lather with the San Valentino soap. Good results all round.

Razorock Chubby
Reef Point Espresso
Mongoose with Captain Sharp blade (5)
Jürgen Hempel Ti
YSL Le Nuit De L’Homme balm and EDT

Following the Razorocktober theme using the Razorock Chubby brush with the Espresso soap from Reef Point. The mongoose got the job done easy with the captain blade which didn’t seem as bad as it had previously. Nice slick lather from the coffee scented soap helped a lot. The scent of the soap is mostly coffee with a sweet caramel type of scent in the background. I’d say it was more cappuccino than espresso but either way it’s nice.

Finished off with a bit of the YSL balm just because it was there next to the EDT. A nice scent but it doesn’t seem to last more than a few hours on me. Even using the balm as well didn’t increase the longevity of the scent.

Sunday 11th October
Omega 49
Reef Point Fougere Santal

Lab Blue (4)
Razorock Baby Blue aftershave

Nice shave to finish off the week and prepare for the week ahead. I was trying to kill off this sample of the Reef Point soap that I stuck in this oversized coffee mug a while ago. Didn’t quite kill it off so one more shave left in the mug. Great scent to this soap and I’ve got a tub coming as a present for me for Christmas. Usual great Reef Point lather with the nice fougere type scent with a bit of sandalwood. This pairs up very nicely with Brut as an aftershave but today I kept with Razorocktober and used the baby blue splash. That was it for this blade. I could tell towards the end of the shave it was past its best so in the blade bank it went.

Well that’s another few shaves down out of Razorocktober, I’ve managed quite well so far. I’ve been putting some thought into using some products in a small rotation of products which should hopefully help get some soap used up. As part of this I’ve stored a lot of soap away in a box out of the way to only use once I’ve put a dent in what’s left out. I’m thinking of taking that a step further by narrowing it down to three soaps to use for as long as possible. I’ll see how that goes and it might not make for good reading on the blog and posts might not be as regular but I’ll keep on posting pictures on Instagram along the way anyway.

Captain Sharp Blade (4)
Fine L’orange Noir after shave

Nice lather from the Reef Point soap and one of my favourite brushes.

The scent to me is a citrus orange scent with a nice bit of woody spice in the background. The usual slick thick lather you get from Reef Point soaps. Definitely recommend trying out one of these soaps as they perform excellently.

I’m not impressed by the captain blades. They just aren’t as good as the feather pro for me and seem to get blunt faster.

Apart from the blade a good shave was had and I’m smelling good after a splash of the Fine aftershave.

I also had a nice brush turn up from whipped dog along with my knot for the rubberset I’m restoring. I’m looking forward to giving this a go soon.

Myrsol Plastic Shave Aftershave

A very tiring day today. Up early and round the boot sale where I found this rack and then back home to sort the garden out while it was still sunny.

I’ve had the Beaudelaire out for a while to use again and today was the day. A nice dark scent which I guess isn’t for everyone but I quite like it and it’s different to everything else I have. No problems loading up the duke and working up a nice slick lather on my face.

I wanted the speed and ease of the mongoose and got out another one of the Captain Sharp Blades to try. The last one I used I didn’t think too much of and binned it after four shaves. I’ll see how this one goes. Did the job ok tonight though.

I rounded off the shave with a splash of the Myrsol Plastic Shave which has a fleeting scent but a nice menthol kick and really leaves the skin feeling soft. Part of the reason for using the Myrsol was to let me try out the Jean Paul Gaultier Fleur de Male EDT I picked up today. It’s a really nice floral scent. One I’ll enjoy wearing.

YSL La Nuit de L’ Homme EDT

Not the best shave today. I can’t really pinpoint why. The lather looked good, usual prep also. I thought it might have been the blade and even switched from the mongoose to the Aristocrat on the side with a once used Sputnik blade which seemed fine on my last shave but still rough today. I guess it was just one of those days.

Still a nice cooling splash of Antesol sorted me out with a nice menthol hit. It’s getting chilly outside and I was even eyeing up the scuttle today. It won’t be long I’m sure.

A couple of squirts of the YSL EDT later on to give myself something nice to smell for the rest of the evening.

Floid Blue after shave

Nice shave today. First pass mostly with the straight apart from just under the chin.

I really loaded up a lot of soap today and probably had about 3 more passes worth after my 3 pass shave with the Razorock Chubby. I think this brush is breaking in well and really blooming and giving up the lather more easily.

New soap today with the Dapper Dragon Signature soap. A really nice scent and my favourite of the range of the 3 I have tried so far. A fruity scent with really nice thick slick lather that leaves a lot of residual slickness behind. That’s a quality I really like in a soap.

Finished off the first pass and remaining passes with the goose and this feather pro blade is bearing up well. Super smooth finish!

I finished off with a few sprays of the Floid Blue after shave which smells great and left my skin feeling good. Once that had died down I had a few sprays of Tom Ford Grey Vetiver and headed out the door.

Razorock Baby Blue Aftershave

So a few things arrived from an Italian Barber order placed with a friend and we went halves on a couple of the big splash bottles, Baby Blue and Figaro Monsieur.

I also had to try out the huge Chubby brush which is the biggest badger brush I own. 27.5mm knot with about a 50mm loft with nice soft tips and just enough backbone, more than I was expecting for a silvertip. After a test lather last night it bloomed nicely and I think it will just get better with use. It certainly seems to be a lather machine.

The soap is really nice also with a scent that seemed to really grow when lathered. The scent is a tobacco type of scent with eucalyptus and menthol and I could pick out the camphor quite strongly. A really nice masculine scent.

It performs really well and produced a nice thick slick lather which was protective and not drying at all.

Another quick go with the straight razor on the cheeks before finishing up with the mongoose. My strop arrived today so I gave the straight a bit of a strop afterwards and it seemed to cut well on my arm hairs when I tested it. I’ll probably be a bit more adventurous over the weekend with the straight and watch a few YouTube videos.

I finished off with a good splash of the Baby Blue aftershave which felt and smelt nice too. Nice little tingle of menthol to cool off a bit.

Overall a very nice shave with some new bits that I’m glad I picked up.
