A Fine Saturday morning shave

Fine American Blend shaving soap and aftershave

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a shave. I’ve been keeping fairly busy of late and I haven’t really bought a lot lately. I feel I’m at that stage where I’m pretty content with the software and hardware I have at the moment and don’t often get drawn into buying new stuff.

I’ve recently borrowed a Wolfman razor from a friend and it does give a good shave and looks really nice but I think ultimately, in my opinion it isn’t worth the high cost for the end result. I’ll be sending it back soon so I’ll try to put up a post with my thoughts and go in depth a little more.

Back to today’s shave and I’ve been hankering to use the Fine Accoutrements American Blend soap again. I got this a while back direct from the USA but I see they are now available from a few UK vendors but the prices seem quite high for just a puck of soap without a container.

The soap is very good and has that nice YSL Rive Gauche type of scent, loading up the big Brad Sear Manchurian knot was fairly easy after leaving the soap to soak in a little water in the old spice mug where it now lives. I worked a lather up on my face adding water a little at a time and soon had mountains of thick slick lather. I’ve seen this soap compared to Tabac but to me the lather is just one tiny notch lower in quality than Tabac, but it is definitely up there with the best.

I’ve decided to use the ikon slant today after using the Wolfman pretty much solidly for well over a week. Straight away I noticed how much more noisy the slant is, almost as loud as those old 1912 type SE razors. With a light touch it delivers a very smooth feeling close shave. This old “Swede” blade is still going well so I think I’ll push it for one more shave.

I rounded off my shave with a nice cooling blast of the matching Fine aftershave which did burn a little so maybe the slant was a little harsher than it felt in use. I then had a few sprays of vintage YSL Rive Gauche to keep the scent going. About 9 hours later I can still smell it.

A great smelling shave was had with the above. The new Fine American Blend soap is very good, seemed to be very easy to lather and could take on plenty of water. The lather seems very protective and very slick as well with the nice American Blend scent.

First try with the Seygus razor so I can’t give a full view on it yet but initial impressions are its very nice looking but a little mild. The weight seemed good with the added stainless weight part added, maybe a little too light without it.

I finished off with a splash of American Blend aftershave and a couple of squirts of the old formula YSL Rive Gauche and smelt good all day.

Monogamy or monotony?

Back to the monogamous shaves with Caties Bubbles La Terre Verte, had a really nice lather from this brush. The loft is quite high so it feels a lot more luxurious than my other shavemac brush. Different handle for the goose today, quite a nice one actually for the price. I’m thinking I need to try the feather super blades to see if they can get a slightly closer shave for me than the professional blades.

I tried out the sample of the new barrister and mann aftershave and it’s quite nice. Like an old school scent similar to original Floid to me.

Really good results with the above today. I used some of the vitos after washing my face with some soap in the bath and left that on till I got out and put the oil on. I’m not sure if it was a freak coincidence or just the extra prep? I’ll try this again soon and see how it goes.

I was still thinking I need to try the feather super blade and even thought this blade was a little tuggy feeling which is a bit early for one of these blades to go blunt. I hear about people getting 20+ shaves from a blade but 10 is pushing it for me. It seemed after the first pass the blades glided a lot better so maybe it was an initial lather issue.

New brush today as I’ve always wanted one of the rubberset 400 brushes but wasn’t willing to pay the high prices these fetch these days. The crown king version seemed great to me with the plisson style knot. Great lather whipped up in no time.

I can finally see the end of monogamous March and it will be great to try out some of the new soaps I’ve acquired recently. I’ve been trying to use a different brush for each shave and I’ve done that so far and could probably make it to the end without doubling up but as I’m going away over Easter I’ll just take one with me to save packing space!

Luckily I’ve just got a new brush from Brad Sears that looks great so deciding what to pack should be easy enough. Speaking of which here is the new brush in all its glory.

I can highly recommend Brad to anyone that is looking for a good quality brush. It was a joy working with him on this new custom brush and his customer service and commitment to detail are unrivalled to me.

I know I’m going to like this brush a lot!

Only a week left of monogamous March and I’ve quite enjoyed sticking to the one soap. I’m probably going to have a big blow out and use all the new soaps I’ve gotten since the beginning of the month but I’m quite keen to use my soaps on a longer basis to see how they perform in depth.

First use of this brush today and I like it a lot. Really soft on the face and it just feels like pure luxury to me. It’s bloomed well as you will see from the photo and is a nice big knot on the face which holds plenty of lather. It’s no lather hog either and has good flow through. For me it’s pretty much perfect. That rounds off a pretty good week for me.

Enjoy the Easter weekend and eat plenty of chocolate eggs!

A really good shave today after a nice long soak in a hot shower, it’s got quite chilly outside so I was glad of warming up.

After squeezing out all the water from the chubby and loading up for about 20 seconds I had plenty of soap in the bristles to begin face lathering. This is a very nice soap that lathered up well with a few drops of water as I went along. It has a really nice cherry almond scent that reminds me of the cocktail cherries you get in a jar, I used to love eating those when I was little.

This has the usual great Razorock performance, thick, slick lather with a nice amount of residual slickness. No irritation which was a bonus as I’d heard it didn’t get on with some people’s skin.

The Standard Razor and English Wilky blade glided around effortlessly and left me with a BBS result.

I fancied finishing off with my favourite scented aftershave to date the Fine Accoutrements American Blend, which is based on YSL Rive Gauche. Nice scent which I’m still smelling around 6 hours later, great cooling menthol hit too.

LTV and the Goose

So after a little tidy up of the drawers in the den and a shift around with the soap box in the bathroom I was ready to shave; there will be some lesser used soaps getting use in the upcoming shaves.

I left the Rooney to soak while I had a shower and left a little water on the LTV to bloom. After my shower and putting on the 3P I used the bloom water to wet my face and started loading up the brush.

I’ve gotta say the scent of the LTV has to be my favourite Catie’s Bubbles scent. This one knocked LPV into second place when a friend sent me a sample. It was so good I had to get a tub of my own.

It performs just like the other Catie’s Bubbles scents in the French style and produces a really nice lather almost instantly with great glide. Face lathering with the Rooney I had a good lather in no time adding a few drops of water to the knot as I went along.

3 passes with the Mongoose with the Feather Pro blade on its second use produced a really close irritation free shave. I’ll be using the goose until this blade gives up just to see how many shaves I can comfortably get from it. So far it’s been my favourite blade but I do have a few more in the sample pack to try out.

I wasn’t sure what aftershave to use today, I really wanted to keep the lovely smell of LTV going but I didn’t think I had anything to match up with it. As I said I had been tidying my shaving drawers and the drawers are see through and the first bottle I saw at the front was the Fine Accoutrements American Blend so I grabbed that. I love the smell of this aftershave which is based on Rive Gauche by YSL, it smells great and has that nice cooling menthol kick all the Fine aftershaves have. A bonus is it really matched the soap well and nearly 2 hours later the scent is still going strong. This is one of those aftershaves I’ll never be without.

Well that’s me ready for another week of work.

Fine Accoutrements Platinum Aftershave

Another good shave from the mongoose today with the second shave with a feather pro guard blade.

The TTFFC Wisp soap has that classic barber shop scent and loaded easily on the brush. Face lathering I found it needed a fair bit of water to really get the lather going to a nice thick lather which had good slickness. The scent is about medium to my nose. Nice and fresh.

I began the first pass which went well with no incidents. It was only on the second pass that my skin felt a bit uncomfortable, this seems to be another soap that irritates my skin a little. For the third pass I used the nearest soap to hand which was a stick of Lea soap. The final pass went well and was a lot more comfortable.

I finished off with a nice big splash of Fine Accoutrements Platinum aftershave. I think the irritation from the soap really told as the splash really did burn today followed by the great big cooling menthol hit. To help things along I used the One Planet aftershave balm which cost me about 30p in my local home bargains. Extremely good value balm with a good menthol hit and plenty of good skin ingredients.

Fine L’Orange Noir

Wow the Mongoose is better than I remember when I borrowed one some time back. Now I’m lucky enough to own my own. I almost want to sell off all my other razors.

Good lather from the Barrister and Mann Black Label soap with a nice fresh orange scent backed up by some woody Cedarwood.

Swirling the damp badger brush on the soap for about 30 seconds was all that was needed to create enough lather for my 3 passes. Super slick and nice and protective, I could barely feel the blade on my skin and great post shave feel.

First go with my own Mongoose which is the satin finish with the Dr Bomber handle. I previously borrowed a mirror finish Mongoose but I found it too hard to keep super shiny and the finger prints annoyed my OCD. Saying that the finish was really nice. I found that the matt finish seemed to glide better over my skin and the knurled handle felt much better in my hand.

I went with the feather pro guard blade which has little guards to stop any major cuts and I thought that was for the best on this first shave. I have a few different blades to try out in the coming weeks.

Tonight’s shave was definitely BBS almost all over apart from a patch on my neck which is always hard to get.

I continued the orange theme with a splash of the Fine Accoutrements L’orange Noir which is based on Terre de Hermes. Really nice smelling stuff with a nice menthol hit.

A quick one from me today similar setup to a shave last week apart from razor and brush.

I had a Jürgen Hempel Ti handle in blue arrive in the mail today so paired it up with the Ikon 101 head and had a really good shave. I don’t use this head as often as I should and with the new handle it had the perfect balance.

A very good close shave and this sample of the Catie’s Bubbles soap has nearly gone. I’ve grown to like the scent a lot and the menthol hit is just at the right level for me.

Everyone seems to be getting in on menthol May so I thought I’d join in today.

This soap is very cooling with a strong Vetiver scent, it reminds me of Guerlain Vetiver. It has the usual great Catie’s Bubbles performance which is plenty slick with a nice post shave feel.

The Personna injector blade is still going strong 5 shaves in on this blade. I do find my shaves are a bit quicker with the Schick Injector, not sure why but they just are. For ease of use they are very similar to a cartridge razor.

Today’s shave was finished off with a splash of Fine Accoutrements Clean Vetiver aftershave which matched the soap well and continued the icy menthol effect on my face.

I should be able to squeeze one more shave out of this sample before moving on to some other samples I have lying around. I’m hoping to use a few up by concentrating on using samples for the rest of the month.

Fine Accoutrements Clean Vetiver Aftershave

Nice shave today with the new to me Tiki Bar Soaps Land Locked shaving soap. It has a very nice scent of orange, spices and patchouli and great slick performance.

I took the 2 band badger brush and gave it a good squeeze and flick so it was just damp and began loading the soap which had a little water left on it to soften it while I had a shower. I was quite surprised how quickly the lather began to build up and within 20 seconds the brush was fully loaded, maybe even a little over loaded.

I started face lathering adding drops of water to the knot as I went until I had the lather at a nice consistency. I found that this soap can take a lot of water and has a nice sheen when it’s fully hydrated.

The New Forest brush held more than enough lather for 3 passes which is good considering the knot is only 19mm. I’m going to be travelling shortly and this will be the brush I take away with me.

For some reason the Clean Vetiver has been calling to me today so I reached for it to finish off today’s shave, must be that I keep seeing it in SOTD pictures and subliminally got the urge to use it. It’s a great scent and I really like the high menthol chill it provides.

As I say I’m travelling shortly so am putting thought into what I’m going to pack. I think I’ve decided on the razor, brush and splash but still need to make my mind up on a soap. I’m thinking either a Stirling sample puck, a Haslinger soap or maybe even some Proraso soap.
