First shave with the mamba on loan from a friend in the UK. In use it felt like the greatest razor ever filling all the hype but the end result wasn’t quite as close as I wanted. I’ll have to try some other blade combos. Maybe a feather!

The scent on this soap is very nice like a sweet tobacco scent which pairs well with the vanilla Clubman aftershave.

I’ve missed using the great SV soaps. Really nice fresh scent on this one and plenty of thick slick lather. I really like the slick residual layer this soap leaves behind for little touch ups and protects the skin well. The matching balm just finishes things off nicely.

Still impressed by the feel of this razor but feel it might provide a closer shave with a sharper blade.

A much closer shave today with the feather. The mamba tames a feather well. I was going to use Tabac today but remembered that I keep meaning to use my Irisch Moos stick. Brilliant lather with a fresh green scent. The splash has quite a strong scent which hangs around for a while too.

Another nice black mamba shave. The Barrister and Mann Roam soap is a very unique scent, very complex and dark. I got a scent like an old well worn leather jacket, something like engine oil and a smokey earthy scent. I was lucky enough to borrow this with the mamba and although it’s a scent that splits opinion, I didn’t find it off putting in any way.

All in all a good shave with the above.

I really like this plush brush and it whipped up a really nice lather today. A third shave was too much for the feather blade so I changed to a Polsilver after the first pass.

With a weeks worth of shaves with the mamba my thoughts are its a very nice razor with good looks and the coating does seem to make it glide very well over the skin. It feels really smooth in use but it’s probably just a bit too mild for my liking. I’m very privileged to have had the chance to try it though.

Nice quick 2 pass shave just to tidy up a bit. My shave on Sunday was quite early in the day so I was looking scruffy. First use of the new B&M soap and it’s a nice refreshing lavender scent with some black tea in there too. I don’t own many lavender scented soaps so it makes a nice change. Good thick lather too.

This wasn’t a great shave and I’m not entirely sure why. I think the blade failed me early on which is unusual for these blades. I can always get a minimum of 3 shaves from one but this one went south fast. I’m not sure I dialled in this soap either, the lather seemed fairly flat. Nothing like the thick B&M lather from the night before. I’ll go back to this soon and give it another go but it wasn’t all that impressive to me on the first use.

Most of this shave was items loaned to me by a friend, some nice stuff here. I wanted to see how the finest badger hair compared to the manchurian hair. It’s still very nice but I’ll need a few shaves to see how it compares.

The Barrister & Mann Diamond soap is an interesting scent, first smell reminded me of cutting the grass in the garden. In use it develops into an interesting scent which is supposed to be like being at a baseball game. Leather, caramel popcorn and even beer are mixed in with the freshly cut grass scent. The performance was very nice too, slick this tallowy goodness.

First try of the slant as well, it’s quite light feeling and I felt it was a little difficult to find the right angle at first. I’m still not sure I’ve got it right. The head is quite a bulky thing but I managed to get everywhere with it ok.

I finished off with a splash of Antesol, a nice splash from Myrsol, probably my favourite of the ones I have used.

First try of the CRSW Puro Fresco and the lather was really good. I think I’ll like this soap a lot. Still struggled with the slant so I’ll try another blade next time around as it didn’t seem sharp enough so a bit tuggy.

Final shave with the chief before I send it back to my friend. I really did enjoy using this brush and the face feel was nice and soft and luxurious.

I was sent a few samples by The Dandy Gent who are based in the UK and have a range of shaving products that can be used from start to finish in a shave. I’ve had a few tries of the facial scrub which has a nice apricot scent and uses crushed walnut shells to exfoliate the skin rather than those controversial plastic balls. So far it seems very nice stuff and I’ll do a further report once it’s been used a bit more. The Classic 47 splash has a great scent and face feel too. I’m not 100% sure what the notes are in this scent but it’s very nice and I think it would appeal to all ages. The dry down reminded me of Spice Bomb in a way. A masculine yet fresh and modern scent which went down well with my wife which is always good.

Quick 2 pass shave with the mongoose, no time for a photo today. I wanted to try the Van Yulay soap again before returning it to my friend. The post shave feel of this soap is great but I just didn’t enjoy the lather it generates and I found I needed to load a lot of soap to get a decent lather. It’s a very dense creamy lather but I just found it too flat for my liking, it reminded me of a brushless shaving cream and lacked the fun of whipping up a good lather as it seemed to form quickly and easily. Overall just not one I’d rush out and buy.

Floid Blue aftershave

What can I say, Mikes is a great soap, truly top tier artisan soap with lots of slickness. It’s one of my top soaps and probably only second to Stirling for slickness. The barbershop scent is also very nice.

A great close shave from the mongoose finished off with a cooling splash of Floid. What better way to unwind after a hectic and draining day at work.

Myrsol Plastic Shave Aftershave

A very tiring day today. Up early and round the boot sale where I found this rack and then back home to sort the garden out while it was still sunny.

I’ve had the Beaudelaire out for a while to use again and today was the day. A nice dark scent which I guess isn’t for everyone but I quite like it and it’s different to everything else I have. No problems loading up the duke and working up a nice slick lather on my face.

I wanted the speed and ease of the mongoose and got out another one of the Captain Sharp Blades to try. The last one I used I didn’t think too much of and binned it after four shaves. I’ll see how this one goes. Did the job ok tonight though.

I rounded off the shave with a splash of the Myrsol Plastic Shave which has a fleeting scent but a nice menthol kick and really leaves the skin feeling soft. Part of the reason for using the Myrsol was to let me try out the Jean Paul Gaultier Fleur de Male EDT I picked up today. It’s a really nice floral scent. One I’ll enjoy wearing.

Fine L’Orange Noir

Wow the Mongoose is better than I remember when I borrowed one some time back. Now I’m lucky enough to own my own. I almost want to sell off all my other razors.

Good lather from the Barrister and Mann Black Label soap with a nice fresh orange scent backed up by some woody Cedarwood.

Swirling the damp badger brush on the soap for about 30 seconds was all that was needed to create enough lather for my 3 passes. Super slick and nice and protective, I could barely feel the blade on my skin and great post shave feel.

First go with my own Mongoose which is the satin finish with the Dr Bomber handle. I previously borrowed a mirror finish Mongoose but I found it too hard to keep super shiny and the finger prints annoyed my OCD. Saying that the finish was really nice. I found that the matt finish seemed to glide better over my skin and the knurled handle felt much better in my hand.

I went with the feather pro guard blade which has little guards to stop any major cuts and I thought that was for the best on this first shave. I have a few different blades to try out in the coming weeks.

Tonight’s shave was definitely BBS almost all over apart from a patch on my neck which is always hard to get.

I continued the orange theme with a splash of the Fine Accoutrements L’orange Noir which is based on Terre de Hermes. Really nice smelling stuff with a nice menthol hit.

Proraso Aftershave Splash

New soap and new razor today. The razor is part of a forum passaround so I’m just trying it out at the moment.

The soap I traded recently and I’d heard it was a love or hate type of scent. Luckily I like it. It’s an earthy fougere type of scent with leather and I can smell quite a bit of anise, which is what I think I really like about it.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Barrister & Mann soaps over on the Aussie Paste & Cut forum, and it’s all true.

Even just blooming the soap while I was in the shower the scent filled the room with the dark rich scent. I shook all the water out of the super badger brush and loaded it up for about 30 seconds, there was a nice load of creamy looking lather in the brush. I face lathered slowly adding drops to the brush as I went along, I had heard that the black label soaps don’t require as much water as the other B&M soaps, but I have no experience with them. I will say it is still quite thirsty so after adding drops to the brush about 3 times I had the lather where I wanted it. It’s nice and thick and protective with plenty of slip and glide, just what I needed while taming the feathered beast.

After watching quite a few YouTube videos I think I got the angle and a few pointers to be on my way.

First pass with my usual shaving hand on the left side of my face went fine. I then swapped to my right hand to do the other side. I managed somehow to nick my cheek on the second stroke, not a lot of blood so I carried on. I definitely don’t have as much control with my right hand.

I still need to learn how to use this razor, I found sometimes I was catching lather with the scales or my hand which I think was putting me off. I do wonder if I would prefer the kamisori type feather better, but realise there is a learning curve which will take some time to master.

On the second pass I think I stuck with my left hand and tried to go across the grain sideways which seemed to work well. On the third pass I did notice a few weepers showing through the lather on my neck but didn’t notice doing them on the previous pass. I ended up with an ok shave, not the closest but not patchy either so it was all good with no major damage.

I finished off the shave with some old faithful Proraso splash which I was expecting to sting a lot but it wasn’t that bad. The soap has a strong scent which lingers after the shave and strangely it paired well with the Beaudelaire scent really well. Not something I was expecting as I was just going with the Proraso for it’s healing properties. The post shave feel on this soap is really nice too.
